# What is a Hosted Access Point?

## A Hosted Access Point lets your organization operate its own Peppol Access Point in its own name, with its own Peppol certificates, on infrastructure hosted by Qvalia. It is intended for partners that want to act as a Peppol Service Provider themselves, without building and running the Access Point software.

- Your organization is the Peppol Service Provider, with its own agreement with OpenPeppol.
- The messages your Access Point exchanges with other Access Points are signed and encrypted with your Access Point certificate.
- You request the Peppol certificates yourself from OpenPeppol, for both the test and the production environment.
- Qvalia hosts the Access Point.

In a standard Qvalia partnership it is the other way around: Qvalia is the certified Access Point and SMP operator, and your customers' messages are exchanged under Qvalia's certificates. See [What does it mean to be a Qvalia partner?](https://knowledge.qvalia.com/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-qvalia-partner?hsLang=en)

If your participants are registered in an SMP under your own identity

Your Qvalia contact confirms whether your setup needs an SMP certificate. Your Peppol Authority may have additional requirements in some countries.

### The certificates

Peppol uses two types of certificates:

- **Access Point certificates** sign and encrypt the messages your Access Point exchanges with other Access Points on the Peppol network.
- **SMP certificates** authenticate your SMP to the SML and the Peppol Directory, and sign the service metadata your SMP publishes for each registered participant. You only need one if your participants are registered in an SMP under your own identity.

Certificates are issued under the Peppol PKI 2025 (G3) hierarchy, with DigiCert as Certificate Authority on behalf of OpenPeppol. See [Peppol certificates for Hosted Access Point partners](https://knowledge.qvalia.com/peppol-certificates-for-hosted-access-points?hsLang=en).

### Who holds the private key

You choose how the private key for the certificate is created:

- **You generate it yourself** with a certificate signing request (CSR). Qvalia recommends this, since the key never leaves your environment. See [How to request a Peppol certificate with a CSR](https://knowledge.qvalia.com/request-peppol-certificate-with-csr?hsLang=en).
- **You enroll via the web.** The key is generated in your browser and delivered to you in a password-protected file.
- **Qvalia generates the CSR for you.** The private key is then stored in a non-exportable certificate store, so Qvalia cannot share it with you. If you later move your Access Point elsewhere, you will need new certificates.

### Before you start

Agree with your Qvalia contact on how the signed certificate is installed on the hosted Access Point and who monitors its expiry date. Peppol certificates are time-limited and must be replaced before they expire.

### If you have questions

- Check that your Service Provider Agreement is signed and that your business registration extract is less than three months old before you request a test certificate.
- Have your organization name, your OpenPeppol Service Desk request, if you have one, and the environment (test or production) ready.
- Contact your Qvalia partner manager, or reach Qvalia Support via [qvalia.com/contact-support](https://qvalia.com/contact-support).
